Bandhan (1969)

The story of Bandhan springs from the soil, from green fields and pastures from the womb of mother earth herself.

From a troubled childhood in which he sees his father, Jeevanlal, as a renegade and thief, waster and wife-beater, young Dharma grows into manhood, with the shadow of the evil parent always dogging his footsteps, always seeking to wreck his hpes and ambitions. For all that Jeevanlal needs is money, money and more money for his shady pleasures. From where it comes, how if is earned, is none of his concern. He even robs his own daughter's jewellery on the eve of her marriage !

But undaunted by the family misfourtunes, young Dharma goes about tilling his lands, ekeing out a meager existence, for Jeevanlal's just takes a heavy toll of the family properties, which one by one find their way to the local money-lender, Malik Ram, who in the end, has the poor family firmly in his hold.

All the joy of Dharma's life is the love of a comely young village belle, Gauri, the only child of Malik Ram the money-lender. But when Dharma's mother goes with a marriage proposal for the hand of Gauri, hell literally breaks loose in Malik Ram's house ! What ! Give his only daughter, the apple of his ageing eyes, to a beggarly lad, now completely indebted to him ! Malik Ram almost has a stroke ! He forbids Gauri from every seeing Dharma again, but when she continues to meet him, Malik Ram is quick revenge attaches Dharma's fields.

Broken hearted Dharma leaves the village and goes to Bombay to seek his fortune, leaving behind a sad Gauri who is eating her heart out for him. He secures a lucrative job as an overseer at a building site, but soon a wild yearning take him back to his village. And even as he lands on his native soil, there is a spurt of events that literally explode like bombshells. The screen fills with drama of a type and magnitude never yet witnessed.

The long, smouldering feud between Dharma and Jeevanlal suddenly crashes to the surface. Dharma stands charged with the murder of his own father ! And his very own mother is the principal and only witness against him... the same mother who had reared him in difficult times and given him all his life nothing but love and affection ! It is curtains for the gallant young man. The evidence against him is overwhelming.

From here on, it is court-room drama that literally moves the audience to the pitch of breathless excitement and suspense. Is Dharma really guilty and must he pay the maximum penalty ? Will his own mother testify against him and send hi to the gallows ? These and other questions simply scream for answers which only the screen will unfold, for the story of 'Bandhan' is the story of love... of bonds between hearts which no earthly power can tear asunder... of ties that raise the simple sentiment of love to heights of divinity....
